User-generated content (UGC), in the form of videos, images and news, are a key element for the news-gathering process of every newsroom today.
More so, UGC has become itself a newsworthy material as important as that produced by media outlets. However, UGC can easily be fabricated or published completely out of context, hence the importance for journalists to verify the authenticity and accuracy of news published on digital platforms.
The best way to acquire the needed skills is through constant training. With that in mind, the Aljazeera Media Training and Development Centre published a guide to help journalists in the newsroom to verify UGC. The booklet ( Download ) presents journalists with up-to-date digital tools and gives key advice through real life examples and well-defined steps on how to verify UGC.
